RIVERTON — Riverton City has lifted a boil water order that covered the area from 3200 West to the city's eastern border, after testing found no bacteria in the drinking water supply.

The Riverton City Water Department issued the order on May 19, 2026 as a precaution, after staff found an illegal cross-connection between a property owner's culinary water system and secondary irrigation water. That cross-connection allowed secondary irrigation water to mix with the city's culinary water system [1]. The department said it detected a reverse flow from the irrigation system into the public drinking water supply, and tested for bacterial contamination the same day, allowing a minimum of 48 hours for results [1].

In a second release, the city said all required tests had come back negative for bacteria, including E. coli, and that the boil order was terminated effective immediately [2]. The city said the cross-connection had been found and disconnected, and that it would increase bacterial and chlorine sampling in the area [1][2].

The city said it had not received confirmation that the water was contaminated with E. coli at the time the order was issued, and described the order as a precaution to assure residents of clean and safe water [1].
