HERRIMAN — With a new school year under way, Herriman City is reminding drivers and pedestrians that they will again be sharing busy streets and crossings around the city's schools, and that not all crosswalks carry the same requirements 1.
At a school zone crosswalk, typically identified by zebra-style striping, drivers must wait until the pedestrian has crossed the entire roadway before proceeding, the city said 1. At a standard crosswalk, typically marked with parallel solid lines, drivers must wait until the pedestrian has crossed their side of the roadway before proceeding 1.
The city asked drivers to slow down in school zones, watch carefully for pedestrians, follow crossing guards and be prepared to stop at crosswalks 1.
Pedestrians can help as well, the city said, by using marked crosswalks, looking both ways and making eye contact with drivers before entering the roadway 1.
The city said the extra attention matters whether residents are driving to work, dropping students off at school or walking through their neighborhood, and that slowing down and staying alert gives everyone the time and space they need to get where they are going 1.
The city's reminder did not list specific crossings or dates for the guidance 1.
