HERRIMAN — Nine Jordan School District middle schools competed in the district's annual Middle School Unified Soccer Tournament at the Zions Bank Training Center in Herriman, the district said in a post on its website 1. The district named the teams: Elk Ridge, Fort Herriman, Joel P. Jensen, Mountain Creek, Oquirrh Hills, South Hills, South Jordan, West Hills and West Jordan middle schools 1.
Unified Sports pairs people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same teams, according to Special Olympics Utah's Show Up Utah programme, which lists expanding the programme to every K-12 district as one of its goals 2. The district described the middle school tournament as part of Special Olympics and said it pairs students of varying abilities with their peers to promote inclusion and understanding on and off the field 1. The Mountain Ridge High School girls soccer team served as referees, and the district thanked parents, coaches and volunteers 1.
The district fields unified soccer at the high school level in the same season. In an October post it named Bingham, Copper Hills, Herriman, Mountain Ridge, Riverton and West Jordan as its teams in the Special Olympics Utah Unified Soccer Championship, and said Copper Hills, Herriman and West Jordan advanced to championship matches at America First Field in Sandy 3. This paper reported that Copper Hills won a state championship in unified soccer, beating Hunter 1-0 at America First Field 4.
What the middle school post does not report is the date of the tournament, any score, the bracket, which school won, or how many students took part 1. It names no individual athlete, and this paper does not name any, under its standards for coverage that involves minors 1.
