SOUTH JORDAN — A couple folding laundry in their bedroom on a Sunday morning heard a pop and the sound of shattering glass, then found that a bullet had struck the frame of their window, KUTV reported 1. The shot came within roughly an inch of entering the room where the two were standing, according to the homeowners 1.
South Jordan police canvassed the scene after the call, and the homeowners told KUTV the round appeared to have come from across a canal behind their house: it traveled through a fence, crossed the backyard and struck the window frame 1. The station published the account Oct. 20 1.
One of the homeowners said police did not find a casing at the scene, and that in his own judgment, based on his knowledge of firearms, the bullet may have come from a .22-caliber gun; KUTV reported that the caliber has not been confirmed 1. Neither the homeowners nor police know who fired the shot or whether the house was deliberately targeted, the station reported 1.
KUTV reported that the homes along the canal back up to an area the couple describe as poorly lit, unsupervised and easily accessible, and that they plan to install cameras to monitor it themselves 1. The homeowners also said their backyard is often full of family on Sundays, that they had not slept well for two nights, and that neighbors share their concern about where another shot might go 1.
Utah News carried the item on its South Jordan feed the same day, labelling it as reported from a single source 2. The Ledger is not naming the couple, who are private individuals.
