Bingham's Newman wins 6A first singles; Yeates and Roberts take first doubles

SOUTH JORDAN — Bingham High School's girls tennis team won a pair of 6A state championships over the weekend, the Jordan School District said 1.

Kamryn Newman went through the first singles bracket without dropping a set and won the championship match 6-1, 6-0, the district said, describing the title as a breakthrough for the junior, who finished as runner-up in her freshman and sophomore seasons 1. The Deseret News reported Newman beat Lone Peak's Ava Jensen in the final at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City 2.

In first doubles, the senior pair of Madison Yeates and Evalyn Roberts beat the top-seeded Skyridge pair 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 1. The Daily Herald's prep scoreboard records Bingham's No. 3-seeded pair defeating Skyridge's top seeds, Kiri Sperry and Molly Jarvie, by that score 3. The Deseret News reported the doubles final moved indoors to Liberty Park's bubble when a late-afternoon thunderstorm arrived 2.

Lone Peak took the 6A team title with 53 points, ahead of Skyridge on 46 and Bingham on 42. Corner Canyon finished fourth with 27 points and American Fork fifth with 21 3.

The 6A tournament opened Oct. 3 at Brighton High School and concluded Oct. 8 and 10 at the Liberty Park Tennis Center, according to the UHSAA 4.
