DRAPER — Corner Canyon beat Skyridge 3-0 in the Class 6A girls volleyball championship match at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University in Orem on Wednesday, the Utah High School Activities Association's scoreboard shows 1.
It is the Chargers' second straight 6A title, the Deseret News reported, and the team lost one set on its path through the bracket 2.
That set came in Wednesday's semifinal, which Corner Canyon won 3-1 against Lone Peak, according to the association's scores for the day 1. Skyridge reached the final by beating American Fork 3-2 in the other semifinal, which left all four semifinalists from Region 3 13.
The final was closer than the sweep suggests in two of its three sets. Corner Canyon took the first 25-23 after Skyridge made ground on Charger errors, and in the third the teams were tied at 28-28 before kills from Maia Schwalger put the Chargers ahead 29-28 and senior middle Leah Schaub blocked the championship point, the Deseret News reported 2. In the second set Corner Canyon opened an 11-3 lead and Skyridge cut it to 20-17 without taking it 2. The Deseret News reported 10 kills from the Chargers' 6-foot-4 middle and 14 from Minnick 2.
Corner Canyon, the top seed, had swept both of its matches on Tuesday, beating Cedar Valley and then Bingham in the quarterfinal 3. Coach Mindy Ricks told the Deseret News on Tuesday that it was the first time her team had everyone back after several weeks of injuries 3. Lone Peak had beaten Corner Canyon 3-1 on Oct. 13 3. The association's board lists the final as the 4 p.m. match on Wednesday 1.
