RIVERTON — Riverton's secondary irrigation water season ends in the week of Oct. 12, and the city's Halloween Bash fills Riverton City Park the evening of Monday, Oct. 12. Neither the City Council nor the Planning Commission meets that week.

The Bash runs 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Riverton City Park, 12600 S 1452 W. The city lists it as free and describes candy, games and activities for all ages, a "Scare Rodeo" spook alley that the city says is aimed at older children, and a themed photo station; families are encouraged to attend in costume 1.

Secondary water is the non-potable system the city supplies for outdoor irrigation, which the city says costs residents less than watering with culinary water. Service "is typically available from approximately May 1 through October 15 each year," the city's water page states 2.

That page puts the seasonal obligation on the property owner. Residents who use secondary water are responsible for turning off their individual valves no later than March 15 each year, when city crews begin the maintenance and testing that precedes a tentative May 1 activation 2. Valves left open past that deadline "may be damaged during this process, flooding may occur, and Riverton City is not responsible for damage caused by valves left open past this deadline," according to the city 2. The May 1 start is only an estimate, the city says, because the date is set by the four canal companies that supply the system. The city says it currently has no water restrictions in place and asks residents to conserve, suggesting sprinkler output be cut by 10 to 20 percent 2.

Responsibility for the line splits at the stop-and-waste valve or secondary meter: the city is responsible on the street side up to and including that point, and the owner is responsible from there into the property 2.

The city asks residents not to shut off water inside the meter box themselves, saying the attempt can damage equipment or cause injury if the system is not properly shut down. A damaged, stuck or unyielding valve goes to the Secondary Water Maintenance team at 801-208-3162 or 801-208-3148 during business hours; the city no longer replaces ball valves for residents but will schedule a safe shutoff so an owner or a contractor can make repairs, the page states 2.

Using secondary water without the required inspections and payment of the monthly fees is a class B misdemeanor, according to the same page. The consequences the city lists are fines up to $1,850 per day of violation, up to 180 days in jail per day of violation, shutoff of culinary water, and compensation for damages the city incurs 2.

On the meeting calendar, the city's published calendar data repeats the City Council meeting monthly on the first and third Tuesdays, and the Planning Commission on the second and fourth Thursdays. The October dates it carries are Oct. 6 and Oct. 20 for the council and Oct. 8 and Oct. 22 for the commission — all outside the week of Oct. 12 3. The city's meetings page states that 2026 work sessions begin at 4:30 p.m. and council meetings at 7 p.m., and that all meetings are open to the public unless closed under the Open Public Meetings Act 4.
