HERRIMAN — Mosquito surveillance has detected West Nile virus earlier than usual this year, with more mosquito samples testing positive than at the same point in recent years, and health officials are encouraging residents to take simple precautions to reduce the risk, Herriman City said 1.

The city said that while most mosquitoes do not carry West Nile virus, there is no way to tell which ones may be infected 1. It advises residents to use an EPA-registered mosquito repellent, to wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors after dusk, and to make sure window and door screens are in good condition 1.

Around the home, the city advises draining standing water from items such as buckets, plant trays, pet dishes and old tires to help reduce mosquito breeding 1. Keeping weeds and tall grass trimmed and maintaining garden ponds can also help limit mosquito activity, according to the advisory 1.

The city said most people who become infected with West Nile virus experience mild or no symptoms, while older adults and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for severe illness 1.

Residents who have concerns about mosquito breeding areas, or who would like additional prevention information, are directed by the city to contact the South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District for assistance 1.
